Scholarship Committee

The Scholarship Committee was established by a vote of the membership in 2015 in approving new Bylaws for MARAC.

Mission and Goals

The primary purpose of the Committee is to award a variety of scholarships to support the continuing education efforts of individuals in the MARAC region. These scholarships include the Marsha Trimble MARAC Meeting Scholarship, the Joan Echtenkamp Klein Meeting and Travel Award, the Karen A. Stuart Local History Collection Scholarship, a Graduate School Archival Education Scholarship, and the Leonard Rapport Modern Archives Institute Scholarship.

Note: The Modern Archives Institute has suspended operations pending further review, so the Leonard Rapport Scholarship is similarly on hiatus until the program resumes.

Operations

The Committee issues a call for applications for the Trimble, Travel, and Stuart Awards at the same times that the printed programs for the fall and spring meetings are distributed to the membership. Once the deadline for scholarship applications has passed, Committee members review the submissions and vote on who will receive awards. Applicants are notified of the status of their submissions before the early registration period for that meeting ends.

The Graduate School Scholarship call for application goes out in the Fall and is to be used for the Spring semester classes. Students are notified by December. The scholarship goes directly to the graduate school and the student is given a complimentary membership to MARAC.

Details about the nature of each scholarship, the process for submitting applications, and the criteria by which the applications are judged can be found on the Scholarships page or the Graduate School Archival Education Scholarship page.

Membership

The Committee consists of six members who each serve for a term of three years. Two are elected each year by the MARAC membership. The elected member receiving the most votes becomes the Junior Co-chair of the Scholarship Committee in the second year of service. The Junior Co-chair shall become the Senior Co-chair in the third year of service. The MARAC Chair shall fill any vacancies on the Committee on a temporary basis until the position can be filled by special ballot prepared by the Nominations and Elections Committee.

The Senior Co-chair of the Committee reports to the Chair of the Awards Committee and also serves on that committee to share information and coordinate activities with the chairs of the other awards committees.
